The Toyota A90 Supra (Mk5) is the easiest 600+ HP rear-wheel-drive car you can buy in 2026. It is mechanically a BMW underneath — same B58 3.0L turbo inline-six, same ZF8 transmission, same chassis tuning philosophy — but Toyota gave it lighter weight, sharper steering, and a fundamentally simpler ECU. The Supra-specific tuning ecosystem is now mature: JB4, MHD, and bootmod3 all support Supra. Most B58 bolt-ons cross over directly. This guide walks the Stage 1 to Stage 3+ roadmap with the Supra-specific gotchas.
What is the A90 Supra?
The A90 Supra (Mk5) launched in 2019 as a Toyota-BMW joint venture. Toyota handled chassis tuning, exterior, and interior. BMW supplied the powertrain. The car is built in Graz, Austria, alongside the BMW Z4 M40i, and the two share roughly 70 percent of their mechanical components.
Engine versions and trim history
- 2020-2021 A90 (3.0L): B58 Gen 1. Factory rated at 335 HP in US spec. Owners dyno'd these closer to 380-400 wheel HP, suggesting BMW underrated them.
- 2021+ A90 3.0 Premium: B58 power output officially bumped to 382 HP after Toyota updated the published rating to reflect dyno reality.
- 2023+ A90 3.0 (Manual): 6-speed manual transmission option added. Same B58 engine. Different transmission calibration.
- 4-cylinder Supra (B48): 2.0L B48 turbo making 255 HP. Different platform, lighter, smaller power potential. We'll cover the B48 separately.
Stage 1: Tune Only (430-470 HP)
Stage 1 on the A90 Supra is software. On 93 octane premium, expect 430-460 wheel HP from a stock Supra. The factory ECU has substantial timing and boost headroom — more than the BMW B58 equivalent because Toyota tuned the Supra's published HP conservatively.
Best tuner for A90 Supra in 2026
- BMS JB4: Plug-and-play piggyback. Best for owners who want to remove the tune before service. Map switching from a phone app. Works on all A90 production years.
- MHD Wireless: Flash tune. Strongest A90 map library through 2023.
- bootmod3: Flash tune. Best for owners running E30+ mixes and aggressive timing maps.

Stage 2: Bolt-Ons (490-540 HP)
The A90 Supra accepts almost every B58 bolt-on with minor or zero modification. Build order:
- Downpipe: Catless or 200-cell catted. ARM Motorsports 6-inch B58 catted downpipe fits Supra and BMW B58 cars. CTS Turbo, VRSF, and Active Autowerke also make Supra-fitment downpipes. Browse the downpipe catalog.
- Charge pipe: Plastic stock charge pipe fails predictably at 500+ wheel HP. Replace with aluminum from CTS Turbo or VRSF before pushing past Stage 1.
- Intake: Supra has a unique airbox design vs BMW B58 cars. Supra-specific intakes from CTS Turbo, MST, and Eventuri are direct-fit. Real-world Stage 2 gain is 8-15 wheel HP.
- Intercooler: Stock A90 intercooler heat-soaks above 470 HP. Direct-fit upgrades from CSF, Wagner Tuning, and CTS Turbo. Mandatory past Stage 2.
With Stage 2 hardware and a fresh tune, expect 500-540 wheel HP on pump gas, 540-580 wheel HP on E30+ mix.
Stage 2+: Port Injection (575-650 HP)
Like all B58 Gen 1 engines, the Supra has direct injection only from the factory. Above 540-560 wheel HP, the DI system runs out of fuel. The fix is the same as the BMW B58 platform: port injection kit.
The BMS Port Injection kit for A90 Supra is the most popular. It bolts on, the JB4 controls the secondary injectors, and it lets you safely hit 600-650 wheel HP on E40+ mix.
Stage 3+: Turbo Upgrades (700-900+ HP)
The stock Supra B58 turbo tops out around 575-600 wheel HP. For 700+ HP you need an upgraded turbo:
- Pure Turbos PURE Stage 2 / Stage 3: Drop-in upgraded turbos. Supports 800-900 wheel HP.
- BMS Stage 3 turbo: Bolt-on alternative.
- VTT GC Series: Strong A90-specific options for 800+ HP builds.
At Stage 3 you also need: upgraded HPFP, forged rods (factory rods bend around 650 HP at sustained pulls), upgraded valve springs, and reinforced cooling.
Supporting Mods That Save Your Engine
Transmission cooler
The ZF8 8-speed in the Supra is the same one used in the F-chassis BMW B58 cars. Same heat-soak issues. Above 450 HP, an external transmission cooler is mandatory. BMS sells a direct-fit kit that also works on F-chassis BMWs.
Differential cooler
The A90 differential heat-soaks during repeated launches. A diff cooler is recommended for cars that drag race or track regularly.
Wheel spacers and fitment
The Supra runs deep negative offset wheels from factory. Most aftermarket wheel choices need spacers. RVNG 15mm wheel spacers with extended lugs are the standard. Always go extended lug, never just longer studs.
Manual transmission (2023+) considerations
The 2023+ A90 6-speed manual uses a stock clutch good to about 450 wheel HP under aggressive launches. Beyond Stage 1, plan for a Spec stage 3 or Sachs SRE clutch upgrade. The manual gearbox itself is robust.
A90 Supra known issues to watch
- Plastic charge pipe: Same failure as BMW B58. Fails around 500-550 wheel HP. Replace early.
- Wastegate rattle: Same as BMW B58. Aftermarket downpipes mask it.
- Oil consumption (early production): 2020 A90 cars burned more oil than expected. Toyota issued a TSB.
- Fuel level sensor: Early A90 cars had a fuel level sensor that read low. Software fix available at Toyota dealers.
What carries over from BMW B58 bolt-ons?
Roughly 70 percent of B58 bolt-ons fit A90 Supra with no modification. Specific cross-fitment notes:
- Downpipes: Cross-fit for most brands. Always verify the brand's listing for A90 fitment before buying.
- Charge pipes: Usually B58-universal.
- Intercooler: Supra-specific in most cases. The packaging differs from BMW B58 cars.
- Intakes: Supra-specific. The airbox shape and inlet location is unique.
- Tunes: JB4 supports both via the same controller with platform setting. MHD and bootmod3 have separate Supra files.
What chassis are you working with?
- Toyota A90 Supra (2019+)
- BMW G42 M240i (2022+) — closely related Gen 2 B58 platform
- BMW G20 M340i (2019+) — sibling B58 chassis
FAQ
What is the safe Stage 1 HP for an A90 Supra?
On 93 octane premium, 430-460 wheel HP is safely sustainable from a stock A90 Supra. The factory rotating assembly handles Stage 1 indefinitely with no rod-bend concerns under normal driving.
Will B58 BMW parts fit my Supra?
About 70 percent of B58 parts cross-fit Supra. Downpipes, charge pipes, oil catch cans, and most engine bolt-ons fit both. Intercoolers, intakes, and exhaust catbacks are Supra-specific because the chassis packaging differs.
JB4 or MHD for the Supra?
JB4 if you want removability before warranty visits. MHD if you want a flash tune with the largest A90-specific map library. Both make similar peak power numbers.
Do I need a tune to install a downpipe?
Catted high-flow downpipes can run unflashed without immediate issues but you will throw a CEL on catless. We recommend pairing every downpipe install with at least a Stage 1 tune to dial in fueling.
How much HP can the stock Supra B58 turbo make?
The factory Supra turbo tops out around 575-600 wheel HP with full bolt-ons. Past that you need an upgraded turbo.
