The BMW S58 is the most overbuilt M-car engine since the S65 V8. It powers the G80 M3, G82 M4, G87 M2, X3M, and X4M. From the factory it comes port and direct injection (the first M-car to ship both), a closed-deck block, forged crank, and stronger turbo hardware than the S55. The aftermarket has been pulling 700-800+ wheel HP from stock turbos since 2022. This guide walks the Stage 1 to Stage 3+ build path with the priority order we install at KORE SPEED.

What is the BMW S58?

The S58 launched in 2019 with the X3M / X4M and rolled out across the M3 / M4 platform in 2020 (G80, G82) and the G87 M2 in 2023. It is a 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six built on the same architectural family as the B58 but extensively reinforced: closed-deck block, forged crankshaft, oil-spray piston cooling, larger turbos, and — critically — factory port injection alongside direct injection.

Cars that use the S58

  • F97 X3 M / X3 M Competition (2020+)
  • F98 X4 M / X4 M Competition (2020+)
  • G80 M3 / M3 Competition / M3 Competition xDrive (2021+)
  • G82 M4 / M4 Competition / M4 Competition xDrive (2021+)
  • G83 M4 Convertible Competition xDrive (2022+)
  • G87 M2 (2023+)

Why factory port injection matters

S55 owners had to bolt on a BMS port injection kit at 600+ HP to clear the direct injection fueling ceiling. S58 ships with port injection from the factory, so it can support 700+ wheel HP on stock fueling. This is the single biggest reason S58 is easier to tune to high numbers than S55.

Stage 1: Tune Only (570-640 HP)

S58 Stage 1 is software-only. No hardware required. On 93 octane premium, expect:

  • G80 M3 base (473 HP factory): 540-570 wheel HP after Stage 1
  • G80 M3 Competition (503 HP factory): 580-610 wheel HP
  • G80 M3 Competition xDrive (503 HP factory): 600-640 wheel HP
  • G87 M2 (453 HP factory): 530-560 wheel HP

On E40 (40 percent ethanol), Stage 1 routinely hits 620-660 wheel HP without bolt-ons. Factory port injection makes ethanol mixes easy.

Best tuner for S58 in 2026

For S58, bootmod3 is the dominant choice. It has the most active S58 development, the largest map library, and the best revision history. JB4 piggyback is also available and works great as a backend-flash-plus-JB4 stack. MHD support for S58 lags behind both.

See our JB4 vs MHD vs bootmod3 comparison for the full breakdown.

Stage 2: Bolt-Ons (650-750 HP)

Stage 2 = downpipes, intakes, charge pipes, plus updated tune. Build order:

  1. Downpipes: S58 has twin downpipes. Catless or 200-cell catted. CTS Turbo, MAD Engineering, ARM Motorsports, VRSF, and Active Autowerke all make direct-fit S58 downpipes. Catless drops EGTs the most and is required for sustained 700+ HP runs. Browse all S58 downpipes.
  2. Intake: S58 OEM airbox is well-designed but restrictive above 600 HP. Direct replacements from ARM Motorsports, BMS, and Eventuri give measurable gains. See the intake catalog.
  3. Charge pipes: Unlike S55 plastic pipes, S58 charge pipes are aluminum from the factory but they still benefit from larger-diameter aftermarket replacements at 700+ HP. Optional at Stage 2, mandatory at Stage 2+.
  4. Crossover pipe / J-pipe: Between turbos and throttle body. The ARM Motorsports S58 crossover smooths airflow and is a real-world 8-12 wheel HP gain.
  5. Mid-pipes / catback: Sound, not HP. Akrapovic Slip-On is the OEM-style premium pick. Eisenmann and ARM Motorsports for aggressive sound.

With Stage 2 hardware and updated tune, expect 680-720 wheel HP on pump gas, 740-770 wheel HP on E40.

Stage 2+: E60-E85 (750-850 HP)

Because S58 has factory port injection, you can run E60 to E85 ethanol mixes without bolting on a port injection kit. The stock high-pressure fuel pump is good to ~800 wheel HP. Above that you need an upgraded HPFP or a Fuel-It style auxiliary pump.

Stage 2+ shopping list

  • E60+ ethanol pump or ethanol blend at the pump (where available)
  • Larger intercooler — CSF, CTS Turbo, or Wagner Tuning S58 race spec
  • Methanol injection (optional alternative to ethanol)
  • Upgraded HPFP at 800+ HP target
  • Oil cooler upgrade if tracking the car

Stage 3+: Turbo Upgrades (900+ HP)

Stock S58 turbos top out around 800-850 wheel HP and start to lose response above 7,000 RPM. To go bigger, you go to upgraded turbos.

S58 upgraded turbo options (2026)

  • Pure Turbos PURE Stage 2 / Stage 3: Reputation leader. Drop-in fitment. Stage 2 supports 900 HP, Stage 3 supports 1000+ HP.
  • VTT GC Series: Strong alternative. Comparable HP envelopes.
  • Doc Race / Garrett G-series upgrades: For builds targeting 1100+ HP and beyond stock fueling capacity.

At 900+ wheel HP, you also need: forged connecting rods (S58 OEM rods bend around 900 HP at sustained pulls), upgraded fueling (HPFP plus auxiliary pump), heavy-duty transmission service, and serious cooling.

Supporting Mods That Save Your Engine

Transmission cooler

S58 cars use the ZF8 8-speed automatic (the manual was only offered briefly on the G80 M3 base). The ZF8 fluid heat-soaks above 720 wheel HP under hard driving. An external cooler is mandatory past Stage 2+.

Oil cooler

Factory S58 oil cooler is sized for stock power. CSF and CTS Turbo make direct-fit upgrades. Mandatory for track use.

Catch can

S58 PCV system passes more oil into the intake than B58 due to higher boost. A catch can keeps your intercooler, charge pipes, and intake valves clean. Less critical than on S55 but still recommended for sustained high-boost driving.

Carbon engine cover

Cosmetic. Won't change power. But the S58 bay looks finished with a carbon cover. ARM Motorsports makes a clean direct-fit S58 cover.

S58 known issues to watch

  • Crankhub bolt (early production): Some 2021 G80/G82 cars had crankhub bolt issues similar to the S55 Comp recall. Check VIN against BMW recall database.
  • Oil consumption (break-in period): S58 engines burn measurable oil in the first 5,000 miles. Levels off after break-in. Track it but do not panic.
  • Tracking oil temps: S58 runs hotter than S55 by design. Don't be alarmed by 250-260F oil temps on hot lapping days, but invest in the oil cooler upgrade if you track.

FAQ

What is the safe Stage 1 HP for an S58?

On 93 octane premium, 580-610 wheel HP is safely sustainable on a stock Competition S58. xDrive cars run a bit higher at 600-640 because of the more aggressive factory boost calibration. G87 M2 sits around 530-560 wheel HP at Stage 1.

Do I need a port injection kit for S58?

No. S58 has factory port injection. This is the biggest tuning advantage over S55. You can run E60+ ethanol mixes without any auxiliary fueling kit, all the way to about 800 wheel HP.

What turbos should I run for 900 HP?

Pure Turbos PURE Stage 2 or VTT GC2 are the standard 900 HP picks in 2026. Both are drop-in fitment and keep the car drivable on the street.

Will Stage 1 void my warranty?

Any aftermarket tune gives BMW dealer service the grounds to deny powertrain warranty claims if they find evidence of it. JB4 is removable in 30 seconds with no DME trace. bootmod3 flash leaves a signature in the DME. Plan accordingly.

Where do I buy S58 parts in Canada?

KORE SPEED is Vancouver's BMW M specialist with in-stock S58 inventory across CTS Turbo, BMS, VRSF, MAD Engineering, ARM Motorsports, Akrapovic, and Brembo. We ship same business day across Canada and duty-free to the US under USMCA. See all tuning options or browse S58 downpipes.
