The BMW B58 is the easiest 600+ HP single-turbo straight-six on the road in 2026. Eight years after launch, the tuning ecosystem is mature, the failure points are documented, and you can roadmap a build from Stage 1 to Stage 3+ without guesswork. This guide covers everything you need to know if you own an F30 340i, F22 M240i, F32 440i, G20 M340i, G42 M240i, G80 M3, or Toyota A90 Supra.
What is the BMW B58?
The B58 is BMW's single-turbo 3.0L inline-six, introduced in 2015 to replace the N55. It uses a closed-deck block, direct injection, twin-scroll turbo, and (on Gen 1) a port-injected upgrade path. Toyota licensed the engine for the A90 Supra in 2019. There are two generations:
- Gen 1 (2016-2018): F-chassis cars, A90 Supra 3.0L. M140i, M240i, 340i, 440i, 540i, 640i, 740i, X3 M40i, X4 M40i. Stock 320-380 HP depending on tune.
- Gen 2 (2019+): G-chassis cars. M340i, M440i, M240i (G42), Z4 M40i, A90 Supra 3.0L (2021+). Stock 382-394 HP. Improved closed-deck block, lighter rotating assembly, revised cooling.
Stage 1: Software Only (370-450 HP)
Stage 1 is a tune file. No hardware changes. Most B58 owners stop here because the gains-per-dollar are absurd.
Tuner options for B58
- BMS JB4: Piggyback controller. Plug and play. Works on Gen 1 and Gen 2. Map switching on the fly. Best for owners who want to remove it before service or warranty visits.
- MHD Wireless: Flash tune. Sits on the DME directly. Excellent map quality for Gen 1. Limited Gen 2 support as of 2026.
- bootmod3: Flash tune. Web-based interface. Strong Gen 2 support. Better revision history than MHD.
On 93 octane (or 91 with E30 mix), Stage 1 maps push Gen 1 cars to 420-450 wheel HP. Gen 2 cars hit 400-430 wheel HP. No supporting mods required for the tune itself, but heat management starts to matter, which leads to Stage 2.
Stage 2: Bolt-Ons (450-525 HP)
Stage 2 means basic bolt-ons plus an updated tune. Order of priority matters more than which brand you pick. Build in this order:
- Downpipe: Catless or high-flow cat. Reduces backpressure, drops EGTs. CTS Turbo, VRSF, and Active Autowerke are the proven choices.
- Cold air intake: Lowers IATs, increases turbo response. CTS Turbo, BMS, and Eventuri are top picks.
- Charge pipe: Stock charge pipe is plastic and fails around 500 HP. Replace with aluminum from CTS Turbo or VRSF before you hit big numbers.
- FMIC or front-mount intercooler: Stock intercooler heat-soaks above 425 HP. CSF, Wagner Tuning, and CTS Turbo make direct-fit upgrades.
With Stage 2 hardware and a fresh tune, expect 470-525 wheel HP on Gen 1 and 450-500 wheel HP on Gen 2.
Stage 2+: Port Injection (525-600 HP)
The B58 has factory direct injection only. At high power levels, the DI system runs out of fuel. The fix is a port injection kit that adds secondary injectors in the intake runners.
BMS sells the most popular B58 port injection kit. It bolts on, the JB4 controls the secondary injectors, and it lets you safely hit 575-600 HP on E30 or methanol injection.
Stage 3+: Turbo Upgrade (600-800+ HP)
The stock B58 turbo maxes out around 575 wheel HP. For 600+ HP, you need a bigger turbo. Options in 2026:
- Pure Turbos Stage 2 and Stage 3 single turbo upgrades
- BMS Stage 3 turbo (drop-in)
- CTS Turbo and VTT options for Supra A90
At this level, you also need: upgraded fuel pump (BMS HPFP), forged rods (CTS Turbo connecting rods), upgraded valve springs, and reinforced cooling.
Supporting Mods That Save Your Engine
Transmission cooler
The ZF8 8-speed transmission is the weak link past Stage 2. Fluid temps spike above 230 degrees F under hard driving and the transmission goes into limp mode. The BMS F-Chassis B58 Transmission Oil Cooler drops temps by 30-50 degrees and is mandatory for any car making over 450 HP.
Differential brace
F-chassis cars (F22, F30, F32, F87) wheel hop hard at high HP launches. The BMS Differential Support Brace ties the differential to the subframe and eliminates the hop without bushings or full mounts.
Oil catch can
B58 is less prone to oil blow-through than N54/N55, but with high boost and a port injection setup, an oil catch can keeps your charge pipe and intercooler clean.
What chassis are you working with?

FAQ
What is the safest Stage 1 HP on the B58?
On 93 octane premium, 420-450 wheel HP is safely sustainable on a stock Gen 1 B58. Gen 2 sits a bit lower at 400-430 wheel HP because of slightly different turbo timing.
Is JB4 better than MHD for B58?
Depends on your use case. JB4 is removable and works on every B58 chassis. MHD is a flash tune so it sits in the DME and survives wireless reflashes. Both make similar peak power.
Do I need a transmission cooler?
Past Stage 2 (450 HP), yes. The ZF8 will heat-soak and limp during hard driving. Past 500 HP it is mandatory.
